Escalator Market Size in SADC
After four years of decline, the SADC escalator market increased by 81% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Escalator Production in SADC
In value terms, escalator production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 48%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of escalators and moving WalkWays, when their volume decreased by -82.4% to X units. Overall, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 579% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, escalator exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 370% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X units) and Angola (X units) dominates exports structure, together constituting 88% of total exports. The following exporters - Mozambique (X units), Namibia (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Botswana (X units) - together made up 13% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +36.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest escalator supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 2.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +6.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+35.5% per year) and Tanzania (-7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 458% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt descent. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Escalator Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of escalators and moving WalkWays imported in SADC surged to X units, rising by 86% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 212%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, escalator imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the major importer of escalators and moving WalkWays in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was near 73% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X units), constituting a 14% share of total imports. Angola (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the escalators and moving WalkWays imports, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Angola (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +52 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported escalators and moving WalkWays in SADC, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -3.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-15.4% per year) and Mozambique (-9.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -39.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 73%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
