Ether Market Size in SADC

The SADC ether market expanded significantly to $X in 2022, picking up by 5.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -4.4% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Ether Production in SADC

In value terms, ether production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Ether Exports

Exports in SADC

Ether exports declined significantly to X tons in 2022, falling by -41.7% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ether exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 378%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of ethers, comprising 70% of total exports. Madagascar (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held near 29% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ether exports from South Africa stood at -4.1%. At the same time, Tanzania (+30.8%) and Madagascar (+26.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012-2022. Madagascar (+20 p.p.) and Tanzania (+7.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -25.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest ether supplier in SADC, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Madagascar totaled +31.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-3.6% per year) and Tanzania (+21.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 233% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Ether Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of ethers imported in SADC dropped to X tons, flattening at 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ether imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 64%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), generating a 5.4% share of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ethers imports, with a CAGR of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Angola (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Angola (-2.1 p.p.) significantly weakened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ethers in SADC, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 5.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +1.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-5.2% per year) and Tanzania (-1.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
