The SADC exercise book market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exercise Book Production in SADC
In value terms, exercise book production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Exercise Book Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, shipments abroad of exercise books increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 46%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, exercise book exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the main exporter of exercise books in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) held a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (10%). The following exporters - Swaziland (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each resulted at a 4% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+92.1%), Swaziland (+40.4%) and Tanzania (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +92.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+17 p.p.), Botswana (+10 p.p.) and Swaziland (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -21.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest exercise book supplier in SADC, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 13% share.
In South Africa, exercise book exports contracted by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+10.7% per year) and Botswana (+89.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exercise Book Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of exercise books imported in SADC surged to X tons, growing by 15% on 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +35.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, exercise book imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the four major importers of exercise books, namely Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Mozambique and Tanzania, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Zambia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.8% share, followed by Malawi (5.8%). Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +12.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest exercise book importing markets in SADC were Madagascar ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together accounting for 52% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +9.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
