In 2021, overseas shipments of extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs decreased by -1.5% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 212% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, meat and fish extracts exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 249% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Botswana represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 12% share of total exports.
Botswana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs exports, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-31.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+84 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-84.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Botswana ($X) remains the largest meat and fish extracts supplier in SADC, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.
In Botswana, meat and fish extracts exports increased at an average annual rate of +21.5% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+11.6%).

Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, meat and fish extracts imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 64%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Botswana prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Botswana increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+32.0%) and Mozambique (+20.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +32.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique increased by +52, +3.2 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported extracts and juices of meat, fish, crustaceans and molluscs in SADC, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 2.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Botswana stood at +12.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+8.4% per year) and Mauritius (-8.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
