Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 212% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, meat and fish extracts exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 249% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Botswana represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 12% share of total exports.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Botswana prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Botswana increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+32.0%) and Mozambique (+20.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
