Organ Extracts Market Size in SADC

The SADC organ extracts market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, organ extracts production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -34.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 55%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of extracts of glands or other organs or of their secretions were exported in SADC; waning by -22% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 4,297%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, organ extracts exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 616%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Zambia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together comprising 95% of total exports. Lesotho (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lesotho (with a CAGR of +108.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest organ extracts supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

In South Africa, organ extracts exports increased at an average annual rate of +29.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (-8.3% per year) and Lesotho (+104.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 40% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 173%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+16.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Organ extracts imports soared to X tons in 2021, increasing by 80% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 176% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, organ extracts imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 137%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the major importer of extracts of glands or other organs or of their secretions, making up 59% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X kg) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (6.9%) and Mauritius (5.1%). Madagascar (X kg), Mozambique (X kg) and Angola (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of extracts of glands or other organs or of their secretions. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+67.2%), Mauritius (+36.1%), Mozambique (+26.5%) and Madagascar (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +67.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-4.1%) and Tanzania (-22.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+20 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17 p.p.), Mauritius (+4.9 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.3 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tanzania (-36.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported extracts of glands or other organs or of their secretions in SADC, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 4.3% share.

In South Africa, organ extracts imports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+53.1% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+42.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -32.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 269%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+12.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
