Plastic Extruder Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC plastic extruder market decreased by -82.8% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption faced a drastic downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, plastic extruder production declined significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, shipments abroad of extruders for working rubber or plastics increased by 107% to X units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, plastic extruder exports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 111%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. Mozambique (X units) took a 9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (8.9%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic extruder exports from South Africa stood at -1.3%. At the same time, Mozambique (+21.0%) and Tanzania (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mozambique (+7.4 p.p.) and Tanzania (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-11.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 82% of total exports.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +28.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -61.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 342%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of extruders for working rubber or plastics decreased by -47.6% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2020, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, plastic extruder imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Tanzania (X units) was the main importer of extruders for working rubber or plastics, generating 45% of total imports. Zambia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X units) and Angola (X units). All these countries together took near 44% share of total imports. The following importers - Zimbabwe (X units), Namibia (X units) and Mozambique (X units) - together made up 8.4% of total imports.

Imports into Tanzania increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+30.3%), Namibia (+21.0%), Zambia (+16.0%), Mozambique (+10.2%) and Angola (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +30.3% from 2012-2021. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Zambia (+9.1 p.p.), Tanzania (+8.7 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+3.5 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -16.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported extruders for working rubber or plastics in SADC, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, plastic extruder imports declined by an average annual rate of -4.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+8.1% per year) and Zambia (+15.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, surging by 220% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
