In 2022, the SADC filter block market increased by 21% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, filter block production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, faced a precipitous descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 2,837%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, filter block exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 127% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), creating an 11% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to filter block exports from South Africa stood at -13.3%. At the same time, Tanzania (+49.6%) and Botswana (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +49.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+11 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -15.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest filter block supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 4.3% share.
In South Africa, filter block exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+52.6% per year) and Botswana (+12.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 97% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+19.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Filter Block Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, overseas purchases of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp increased by 34% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 49%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, filter block imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 40%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2022. Malawi (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Zimbabwe (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp. At the same time, Malawi (+23.8%), Zimbabwe (+5.4%), Tanzania (+3.1%), Mozambique (+2.8%) and Madagascar (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +23.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-14.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+6.6 p.p.), Malawi (+4.8 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -9.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp in SADC, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 5.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 5.1% share.
In South Africa, filter block imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+1.7% per year) and Malawi (+26.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -18.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
