Exports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X units of fire extinguishers were exported in SADC; dropping by -82.6% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fire extinguisher exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the major exporter of fire extinguishers, mixing up 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X units), constituting a 21% share of total exports. Botswana (X units) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -44.6% from 2012 to 2022. Namibia (-8.0%) and Botswana (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+20 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-30.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fire extinguisher supplier in SADC, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 5% share of total exports.
In South Africa, fire extinguisher exports declined by an average annual rate of -15.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (-6.2% per year) and Botswana (-3.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 28% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 3,711%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+51.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, overseas purchases of fire extinguishers increased by 86% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant decline. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fire extinguisher imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), constituting a 12% share of total imports. The following importers - Mauritius (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Angola (X units), Namibia (X units) and Zambia (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fire extinguisher imports into South Africa stood at -26.3%. At the same time, Tanzania (+5.6%), Namibia (+5.4%) and Zambia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +5.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-1.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-11.5%) and Angola (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+11 p.p.), Mauritius (+2.4 p.p.), Namibia (+1.9 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.9 p.p.), Angola (+1.8 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -27.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fire extinguishers in SADC, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 6.6% share.
In South Africa, fire extinguisher imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+3.6% per year) and Angola (-9.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, waning by -36.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 2,407%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
