After three years of decline, the SADC first-aid kit market increased by 2.7% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, first-aid kit production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of first-aid boxes and kits increased by 70% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild contraction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, first-aid kit exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 88%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), committing a 6.3% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to first-aid kit exports from South Africa stood at -1.2%. At the same time, Mauritius (+48.7%) and Zambia (+19.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +48.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Mauritius (+6.2 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest first-aid kit supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.
In South Africa, first-aid kit exports declined by an average annual rate of -2.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+33.9% per year) and Zambia (-7.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
First-Aid Kit Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, supplies from abroad of first-aid boxes and kits increased by 23% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 67%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, first-aid kit imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 121% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Zambia (X tons) was the main importer of first-aid boxes and kits, generating 37% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Mozambique (X tons), Angola (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 51% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Zambia decreased at an average annual rate of -11.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+26.8%), Botswana (+4.1%), Tanzania (+3.4%) and Namibia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +26.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-2.8%) and Angola (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+14 p.p.), South Africa (+6.1 p.p.), Botswana (+3.7 p.p.), Tanzania (+3 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia saw its share reduced by -28.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Zambia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported first-aid boxes and kits in SADC, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Zambia amounted to -9.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-2.3% per year) and Mozambique (+26.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
