In terms of the main exporting countries, Malawi, with a CAGR of +79.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -44.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 213% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of fish fillets (dried, salted or in brine, but not smoked) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 176%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved fish fillet imports fell modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo represented the main importer of fish fillets (dried, salted or in brine, but not smoked) in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 57% of total imports in 2021. Angola (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malawi (11%) and South Africa (6.1%). Comoros (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malawi (+55.2%), Comoros (+53.9%) and Botswana (+25.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +55.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-7.5%) and South Africa (-25.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Comoros and Botswana increased by +34, +11, +3.6 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Angola ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 85% share of total imports. Malawi, Comoros and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.
Comoros, with a CAGR of +76.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -41.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 135%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
