The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In value terms, wood flat pallet production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X units of flat pallets and pallet collars of wood were exported in SADC; which is down by -11% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, wood flat pallet exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which resulted at 79% of total exports. Botswana (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Mozambique (X units) and Swaziland (X units). All these countries together took near 20% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+43.0%), Mozambique (+22.1%) and Botswana (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +43.0% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+31 p.p.), Swaziland (+4.6 p.p.), Mozambique (+4 p.p.) and Botswana (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wood flat pallet supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 3.8% share.

In South Africa, wood flat pallet exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+24.2% per year) and Swaziland (+35.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, rising by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 53%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Wood Flat Pallet Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of flat pallets and pallet collars of wood imported in SADC stood at X units, with an increase of 3.4% against 2020 figures. In general, imports enjoyed notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood flat pallet imports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Botswana was the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which accounted for 41% of total imports. South Africa (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mozambique (X units) and Swaziland (X units). All these countries together held near 44% share of total imports. Seychelles (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Angola (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Seychelles (with a CAGR of +22.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Botswana ($X), Mozambique ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 73% share of total imports.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +21.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, waning by -9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
