In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the key exporter of flat panel video monitor, lcd or plasma, generating 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X units), constituting a 33% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +49.8%).

Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, LCDs and plasmas export price increased by +21.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana amounted to $X per unit.

Imports in SADC
After five years of decline, overseas purchases of flat panel video monitor, lcd or plasma increased by 28% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, LCDs and plasmas imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 72% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units) and Mauritius (X units), together mixing up a 12% share of total imports. Namibia (X units), Mozambique (X units), Zambia (X units) and Botswana (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to LCDs and plasmas imports into South Africa stood at -5.3%. At the same time, Mozambique (+38.5%), Tanzania (+35.0%), Zambia (+17.4%) and Mauritius (+12.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +38.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-3.2%) and Botswana (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+5.8 p.p.), Mauritius (+4.3 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.2 p.p.), Botswana (+2 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-16.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flat panel video monitor, lcd or plasma in SADC, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 4.9% share.
In South Africa, LCDs and plasmas imports declined by an average annual rate of -6.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+5.8% per year) and Namibia (+8.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 24%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
