In 2021, shipments abroad of flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa decreased by -6.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -13.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa totaled $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -4.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporter of flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa in SADC, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), constituting a 14% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa. At the same time, Botswana (+50.6%) and Tanzania (+32.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +50.6% from 2012-2021. Botswana (+14 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -8.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa supplier in SADC, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports.

In South Africa, exports of flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa expanded at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+20.3% per year) and Tanzania (+47.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa were imported in SADC; jumping by 19% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Comoros (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) were the largest importers of flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa, together mixing up 93% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -10.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+15.4%), Comoros (+14.4%), Zimbabwe (+5.3%), Zambia (+4.5%) and Tanzania (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mozambique (-4.5%) and Angola (-9.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Comoros, Tanzania and Zimbabwe increased by +11, +6.2, +5.4, +5.3 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest flexible tubes, pipes and hoses of plastics, with a burst pressure ≥ X MPa importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Zambia ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Comoros, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Comoros, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
