For the third year in a row, the SADC fish meals and pellet market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.2% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -2.4% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Production of Flours, Meals And Pellets Of Fish in SADC
In value terms, fish meals and pellet production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
Fish meals and pellet exports totaled X tons in 2021, increasing by 6% against 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet exports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest exporter of flours, meals and pellets of fish, comprising 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), mixing up a 12% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+111.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +111.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-15.1%) and Namibia (-25.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+32 p.p.) and Botswana (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-17.2 p.p.) and Namibia (-18.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest fish meals and pellet supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with an 8.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-32.1% per year) and Namibia (-20.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -16.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 35%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Flours, Meals And Pellets Of Fish
Imports in SADC
In 2021, supplies from abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish decreased by -30% to X tons, falling for the sixth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish meals and pellet imports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a sharp reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 9.5%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Mauritius (X tons) and Comoros (X tons) represented the largest importers of flours, meals and pellets of fish in SADC, together amounting to near 42% of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Angola (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 47% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +31.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flours, meals and pellets of fish in SADC, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Lesotho, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mauritius totaled +16.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-9.4% per year) and Lesotho (-22.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
