In value terms, seafood meals and pellets production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2021, approx. X tons of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs were exported in SADC; waning by -33.1% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 85%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, seafood meals and pellets exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 97% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 71% of total exports. Mauritius (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons). All these countries together held near 25% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to seafood meals and pellets exports from South Africa stood at -2.2%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+40.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +40.3% from 2012-2021. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Namibia (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+5.8 p.p.), Mauritius (+3.4 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Namibia (-11 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest seafood meals and pellets supplier in SADC, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+0.8% per year) and Namibia (-8.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after five years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, seafood meals and pellets imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Zambia (X tons) represented the largest importer of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs, constituting 41% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (14%), Zimbabwe (12%) and Malawi (4.8%). The following importers - Madagascar (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Zambia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs in SADC, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 13% share.

In Zambia, seafood meals and pellets imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-13.4% per year) and Zimbabwe (-8.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 19% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
