Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -8.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, acyclic hydrocarbons derivatives imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 80%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), constituting a 6.3% share of total imports. Tanzania (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to acyclic hydrocarbons derivatives imports into South Africa stood at +5.4%. At the same time, Mozambique (+26.4%), Madagascar (+6.3%), Zimbabwe (+6.3%) and Angola (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +26.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+3.5 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tanzania (-4.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fluorinated, brominated or iodinated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons in SADC, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 3.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 2% share.

In South Africa, acyclic hydrocarbons derivatives imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-4.5% per year) and Tanzania (+5.2% per year).
