In value terms, baby food exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 49%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the one major exporters of food preparations for infants, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the food preparations for infants exports, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +3.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest baby food supplier in SADC.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 23% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +4.9% per year.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, imports of food preparations for infants in SADC soared to X tons, jumping by 27% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, baby food imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Angola (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) were the main importers of food preparations for infants in 2021, accounting for near 30% and 24% of total imports, respectively. Botswana (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Namibia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 32% share of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +18.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mozambique ($X), Angola ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 55% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Mauritius, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Tanzania, which together accounted for a further 32%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +24.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
