The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the main exporter of footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2021. Zambia (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Lesotho (8.8%) and Malawi (5.1%). The following exporters - Mauritius (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.5% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+27.8%), Lesotho (+27.7%) and Malawi (+25.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-6.1%) and Tanzania (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Lesotho (+7.8 p.p.), South Africa (+5.3 p.p.), Malawi (+4.4 p.p.) and Mauritius (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tanzania (-6.6 p.p.) and Zambia (-9.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lesotho ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 3.7% share.

In 2021, imports of footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap in SADC expanded rapidly to X tons, surging by 10% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Tanzania was the main importer of footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 46% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons), together comprising a 45% share of total imports. Imports into Tanzania increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Madagascar (+9.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.7%) and Namibia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +9.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-6.5%) and Angola (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+18 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.6 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-11.7 p.p.) and Angola (-16.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 81% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +12.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
