Leather Footwear Market Size in SADC

The SADC leather footwear market rose remarkably to $X in 2021, picking up by 8.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 178%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

Leather footwear exports soared to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 38% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporter of leather footwear in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (5.7%). Lesotho (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+11.5%) and Lesotho (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mauritius and Lesotho increased by +6.8 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest leather footwear supplier in SADC, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a 2.7% share.

In South Africa, leather footwear exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+8.2% per year) and Lesotho (+5.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per kg, picking up by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per kg in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per kg), while Zimbabwe ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, leather footwear imports in SADC expanded markedly to X tons, picking up by 5.1% against the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 15%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) represented the key importers of leather footwear, together mixing up 82% of total imports. Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +15.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leather footwear in SADC, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -1.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+3.9% per year) and Mauritius (+0.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per kg, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per kg in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per kg), while Botswana ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
