The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +17.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 36%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in SADC
For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded decline in overseas shipments of fresh or chilled fish fillets, which decreased by -4.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fresh fish fillet exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Tanzania (X tons) was the main exporter of fresh or chilled fish fillets, making up 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mauritius (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 4.5% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fresh fish fillet exports from Tanzania stood at -10.8%. At the same time, Mozambique (+59.2%) and Mauritius (+12.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +59.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mauritius, Tanzania and Mozambique increased by +2.4, +2.1 and +1.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest fresh fish fillet supplier in SADC, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 3.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Tanzania stood at -8.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-8.1% per year) and Mauritius (+11.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 38% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+10.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled fish fillets decreased by -10.4% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 115%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fresh fish fillet imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 34% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons). All these countries together held near 51% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - each recorded an 8.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +29.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 69% share of total imports. Lesotho, Zambia, Botswana and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Zambia, with a CAGR of +17.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 65%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
