Frozen Cuttlefishes Market Size in SADC

For the fifth consecutive year, the SADC frozen cuttlefishes market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -16% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption continues to indicate a deep contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Frozen Cuttlefishes Production in SADC

In value terms, frozen cuttlefishes production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 145%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, overseas shipments of frozen cuttlefishes increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen cuttlefishes exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Namibia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), comprising a 7.3% share of total exports.

Namibia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen cuttlefishes exports, with a CAGR of +7.1% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-27.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+65 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-64.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest frozen cuttlefishes supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports.

In Namibia, frozen cuttlefishes exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -6.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 15%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-2.2%).

Imports in SADC

Frozen cuttlefishes imports shrank to X tons in 2021, waning by -6.2% against the previous year. Overall, imports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 7.9% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen cuttlefishes imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen cuttlefishes imports into South Africa stood at -6.3%. At the same time, Seychelles (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.6% from 2012-2021. Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritius (-17.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+34 p.p.) and Seychelles (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mauritius (-2.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen cuttlefishes in SADC, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 3.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Seychelles, with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -6.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (-17.1% per year) and Seychelles (+5.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
