Frozen Pork Cut Market Size in SADC

The SADC frozen pork cut market was estimated at $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +81.3% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Frozen Pork Cut Production in SADC

In value terms, frozen pork cut production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of frozen pork cut production, accounting for 54% of total volume. Moreover, frozen pork cut production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mozambique (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Zambia (X tons), with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in South Africa totaled +7.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+10.0% per year) and Zambia (+2.7% per year).

Frozen Pork Cut Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, when their volume decreased by -32.9% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, recorded a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork cut exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 6.8% share, followed by Namibia (5.9%). Botswana (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen pork cut exports from South Africa stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Botswana (+65.5%), Zimbabwe (+7.2%) and Namibia (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +65.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana and Zimbabwe increased by +4.4 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest frozen pork cut supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zimbabwe (-0.7% per year) and Botswana (+59.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Botswana ($X per ton) and Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and Namibia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Frozen Pork Cut Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat decreased by -0.7% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, frozen pork cut imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Angola (X tons) dominates imports structure, together achieving 91% of total imports. The following importers - Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - each reached a 4.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Angola ($X) and Namibia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 89% share of total imports.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +14.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
