Frozen Potato Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC frozen potato market increased by 3.3% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +6.2% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen potato production declined modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +2.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of frozen potatoes decreased by -1.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 10% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen potato exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 24%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X tons), together finishing at 98% of total export.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of frozen potatoes. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest frozen potato supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +1.2%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 16%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of frozen potatoes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key importer of frozen potatoes, achieving 52% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Zambia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Namibia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 37% share of total imports. Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of frozen potatoes. At the same time, Zambia (+13.9%), Swaziland (+8.6%), Angola (+5.7%), Mauritius (+5.2%) and Botswana (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zambia, Mauritius, Angola and Swaziland increased by +5.5, +2.5, +1.8 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen potatoes in SADC, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+0.6% per year) and Mauritius (+4.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
