The SADC preserved frozen potato market expanded notably to $X in 2021, with an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 79%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X tons), together finishing at 98% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen potatoes prepared or preserved exports, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest preserved frozen potato supplier in SADC.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved increased by 38% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 59% of total imports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.6% share, followed by Botswana (7.1%), Zambia (6.7%), Angola (5.6%) and Namibia (4.7%). Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved. At the same time, Botswana (+65.5%), Namibia (+27.3%), Swaziland (+18.8%), Zambia (+18.4%), Angola (+6.3%) and Mauritius (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +65.5% from 2012-2021. Botswana (+7 p.p.), Zambia (+4.9 p.p.), Namibia (+4 p.p.) and Angola (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -17.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen potatoes prepared or preserved in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -1.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+3.4% per year) and Botswana (+58.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
