In 2021, the SADC market for frozen scallops, including queen scallop was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption continues to indicate a mild reduction. In value terms, frozen scallops, including queen scallop production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 14%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, exports of frozen scallops, including queen scallop in SADC surged to X tons, with an increase of 62% against 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 102% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen scallops, including queen scallop exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 408% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tanzania was the main exporter of frozen scallops, including queen scallop in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 56% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Mozambique (12%) and Madagascar (11%). The following exporters - Namibia (X kg) and Seychelles (X kg) - together made up 5.8% of total exports.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen scallops, including queen scallop exports, with a CAGR of +37.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Seychelles (+34.8%), Namibia (+28.6%) and Madagascar (+20.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mozambique (-12.8%) and South Africa (-13.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+53 p.p.), Madagascar (+8.8 p.p.), Namibia (+3.5 p.p.) and Seychelles (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Mozambique (-27.1 p.p.) and South Africa (-39.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 75% of total exports. These countries were followed by Madagascar, Seychelles and Namibia, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Seychelles, with a CAGR of +37.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -42.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 151%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+13.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded decline in purchases abroad of frozen scallops, including queen scallop, which decreased by -1.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 63%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen scallops, including queen scallop imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main importer of frozen scallops, including queen scallop, achieving 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Seychelles (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Namibia (X tons), together mixing up a 47% share of total imports. The following importers - Madagascar (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Madagascar (with a CAGR of +28.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Seychelles ($X) and Mauritius ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 87% of total imports. Namibia, Madagascar, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +14.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, frozen scallops, including queen scallop import price decreased by -11.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 75% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
