Fructose Market Size in SADC

The SADC fructose market was estimated at $X in 2021, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 33%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

For the fifth year in a row, SADC recorded growth in shipments abroad of fructose and fructose syrup, which increased by 35% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, fructose exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Swaziland dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), mixing up a 6.1% share of total exports.

Swaziland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fructose and fructose syrup exports, with a CAGR of +18.0% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Swaziland increased by +34 percentage points.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) remains the largest fructose supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Swaziland totaled +4.6%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -1.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Swaziland stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.6%).

Fructose Imports

Imports in SADC

For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in purchases abroad of fructose and fructose syrup, which increased by 6.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fructose imports stood at $X in 2021. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.0% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 33%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 93% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fructose and fructose syrup imports, with a CAGR of +13.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of South Africa (+14 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fructose and fructose syrup in SADC, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 5.2% share of total imports.

In South Africa, fructose imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.
