In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the major exporter of fuel, lubricating or cooling-medium pumps for internal combustion engines, making up 60% of total exports. Zambia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Namibia (7.1%) and Botswana (5.5%). In South Africa, fuel or lubricating pump exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (-2.7% per year) and Botswana (-13.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 74% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 34%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fuel or lubricating pump imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 72% of total imports in 2021. Zambia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units). All these countries together took approx. 16% share of total imports. The following importers - Zimbabwe (X units) and Mozambique (X units) - each accounted for a 7.9% share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+20.9%), Tanzania (+10.2%), Mozambique (+6.6%) and Zambia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+19 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.8 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Zimbabwe (-7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fuel, lubricating or cooling-medium pumps for internal combustion engines in SADC, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 3.5% share.
