Ghee Market Size in SADC
The SADC ghee market reduced to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw pronounced growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Ghee Production in SADC
In value terms, ghee production fell sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 189% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Tanzania (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of ghee production, comprising approx. 93% of total volume. Moreover, ghee production in Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, South Africa (X tons), more than tenfold.
In Tanzania, ghee production expanded at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2022.
Ghee Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of ghee increased by 0.5% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +37.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ghee exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 149% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the main exporter of ghee in SADC, making up 98% of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ghee exports, with a CAGR of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of South Africa (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest ghee supplier in SADC.
In South Africa, ghee exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -13.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 69% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +1.3% per year.
Ghee Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of ghee imported in SADC shrank to X tons, dropping by -4.3% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ghee imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 55%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Mauritius (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented roughly 54% of total imports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Lesotho (7.9%), Mozambique (7.4%), Zambia (4.9%) and Zimbabwe (4.6%).
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of +21.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ghee in SADC, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mauritius totaled +1.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+34.5% per year) and Mozambique (+27.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+12.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
