In 2022, approx. X tons of gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles were exported in SADC; picking up by 6.4% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 16%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles, mixing up 66% of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (6.3%) and Lesotho (5%). Zambia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports from South Africa stood at -4.4%. At the same time, Mozambique (+111.5%) and Zimbabwe (+20.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +111.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-2.3%), Lesotho (-4.1%), Zambia (-6.4%) and Namibia (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+12 p.p.) and Mozambique (+6.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Zambia, Namibia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -3.4% and -11.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle supplier in SADC, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 9.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 3.9% share.

In South Africa, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zimbabwe (+22.4% per year) and Mozambique (+99.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 16%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of gingerbread, sweet biscuits and waffles imported in SADC dropped to X tons, reducing by -4.4% on 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -18.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 46%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, gingerbread, sweet biscuit and waffle imports stood at $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented roughly 64% of total imports in 2022. Mozambique (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Botswana (X tons). All these countries together held near 16% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +14.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Angola ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +15.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
