In 2021, glass electrical insulator exports in SADC contracted markedly to X units, declining by -29% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 378% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, glass electrical insulator exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 745% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which accounted for 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X units), achieving a 28% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +22.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+78.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +78.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Botswana (+27 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-11.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest glass electrical insulator supplier in SADC, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 1.1% share of total exports.
In South Africa, glass electrical insulator exports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.9% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -38.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 138%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana totaled $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-3.5%).

Imports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X units of glass electrical insulators were imported in SADC; with an increase of 93% compared with the previous year. In general, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Tanzania represented the largest importer of glass electrical insulators in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was approx. 45% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), Mozambique (X units) and South Africa (X units), together creating a 49% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +98.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 87% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +94.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, rising by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
