Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, glass fibre fabrics exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to glass fibre fabrics exports from South Africa stood at -7.3%. At the same time, Namibia (+10.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Botswana (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest glass fibre fabrics supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -5.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+10.7% per year) and Botswana (-9.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, glass fibre fabrics imports in SADC contracted modestly to X tons, remaining constant against 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass fibre fabrics imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 27%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 56% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together generating a 31% share of total imports. Mauritius (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Angola (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to glass fibre fabrics imports into South Africa stood at -6.4%. At the same time, Mozambique (+28.1%), Tanzania (+18.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.5%), Mauritius (+6.9%) and Madagascar (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Tanzania and Mauritius increased by +10, +9.4, +7.2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glass fibre fabrics in SADC, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 5.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -7.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+24.2% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -6.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
