In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of glass fibre chopped strands in SADC, creating 99% of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the glass fibre chopped strands exports, with a CAGR of +27.7% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2021, purchases abroad of glass fibre chopped strands increased by 55% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, glass fibre chopped strand imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total imports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the glass fibre chopped strands imports, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+12.6%) and Tanzania (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Angola (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -5.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glass fibre chopped strands in SADC, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 5.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 2.6% share.
In South Africa, glass fibre chopped strand imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+15.8% per year) and Zimbabwe (+10.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 21% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
