The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 37%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Glass fibre mat exports reduced to X tons in 2022, falling by -11.5% on 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 91%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, glass fibre mat exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) dominates exports structure, together mixing up 98% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +27.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest glass fibre mat supplier in SADC, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -5.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+25.0% per year) and Namibia (+2.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 4.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 74% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of glass fibre mats were imported in SADC; waning by -15.3% against the year before. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
In value terms, glass fibre mat imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +40.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 85% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +12.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+25.3%) and Madagascar (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +16 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glass fibre mats in SADC, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 4.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 3.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +6.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (-0.8% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -10.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 31%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
