Glass Closure Market Size in SADC

The SADC glass closure market totaled $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -0.9% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Glass Closure Production in SADC

In value terms, glass closure production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Glass Closure Exports

Exports in SADC

For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of glass stoppers, lids and other closures, which increased by 13% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 354%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, glass closure exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 421%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2022. Lesotho (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the glass stoppers, lids and other closures exports, with a CAGR of -2.2% from 2012 to 2022. Lesotho (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+14 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest glass closure supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lesotho ($X), with a 0.9% share of total exports.

In South Africa, glass closure exports plunged by an average annual rate of -7.1% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 173% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Lesotho amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-5.1%).

Glass Closure Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, glass closure imports in SADC dropped dramatically to X tons, shrinking by -89.2% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 480% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, glass closure imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 814% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) represented the largest importer of glass stoppers, lids and other closures in SADC, comprising 72% of total import. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), constituting a 6.3% share of total imports. The following importers - Seychelles (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +31.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest glass closure importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Namibia ($X) and Botswana ($X), together comprising 71% of total imports. Seychelles, Mauritius, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Madagascar, Zambia, Angola, Tanzania and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Among the main importing countries, Seychelles, with a CAGR of +40.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -19.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 71%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Seychelles (+13.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
