South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2021.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches exports, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest starch glue supplier in SADC.

Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, starch glue imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Swaziland (X tons) was the largest importer of glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches, achieving 57% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together constituting a 31% share of total imports. Botswana (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Swaziland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches imports, with a CAGR of +48.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+28.0%), Botswana (+16.8%) and Mozambique (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-3.8%), Zambia (-5.5%) and Angola (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Swaziland (+54 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+3.8 p.p.), Botswana (+2.2 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia, South Africa and Angola saw its share reduced by -4.8%, -12.5% and -18.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches in SADC, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Swaziland stood at +33.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-6.2% per year) and Mozambique (+14.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -3.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
