After four years of growth, the SADC goat meat market decreased by -0.5% to $X in 2022. Goat Meat Production in SADC
In value terms, goat meat production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 27%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Tanzania (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), with a combined 66% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Malawi (with a CAGR of +7.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average goat meat yield declined modestly to X kg per head in 2022, remaining stable against 2021. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 2.7%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for goat meat production in SADC; with a decrease of -2.7% compared with the year before. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 13%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, shipments abroad of goat meat increased by 39% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 179%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, goat meat exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 349% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Tanzania (X tons) was the main exporter of goat meat in SADC, comprising 99% of total export.
Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the goat meat exports, with a CAGR of -1.5% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) also remains the largest goat meat supplier in SADC.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Tanzania totaled +1.6%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Tanzania.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Tanzania amounted to +3.2% per year.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, imports of goat meat in SADC declined notably to X tons, shrinking by -16.8% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 61%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, goat meat imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 56%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main importer of goat meat, mixing up 53% of total imports. Seychelles (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Angola (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Comoros (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 46% share of total imports.
Imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Comoros (+12.7%) and Seychelles (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Comoros emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-9.2%) and Mauritius (-17.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+39 p.p.), Seychelles (+7.2 p.p.) and Comoros (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-12 p.p.) and Mauritius (-32.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported goat meat in SADC, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Seychelles ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +9.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Seychelles (+2.1% per year) and Angola (-11.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 23%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
