In 2021, the SADC market for granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Namibia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) dominates exports structure, together constituting 94% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of -8.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest monumental stone granules and powder supplier in SADC, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

In South Africa, monumental stone granules and powder exports declined by an average annual rate of -14.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (-25.9% per year) and Tanzania (+1.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

For the third year in a row, SADC recorded growth in supplies from abroad of granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone, which increased by 19% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 323% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, monumental stone granules and powder imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 927%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Mauritius prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), generating a 6.1% share of total imports. Botswana (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Mauritius was also the fastest-growing in terms of the granules, chippings and powder of monumental stone imports, with a CAGR of +96.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+20.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Tanzania (-7.8%) and South Africa (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
