Production of Grapefruit Juice (Single Strength) in SADC

In value terms, grapefruit juice (single strength) production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 235% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of grapefruit juice (single strength), when their volume decreased by -94.7% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 173%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, grapefruit juice (single strength) exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a precipitous slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 203%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), generating a 4.9% share of total exports. Namibia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to grapefruit juice (single strength) exports from South Africa stood at -25.1%. At the same time, Namibia (+6.4%) and Swaziland (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.4% from 2012-2021. Swaziland (+4.5 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -6.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest grapefruit juice (single strength) supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 4.3% share of total exports.

In South Africa, grapefruit juice (single strength) exports plunged by an average annual rate of -22.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (+2.0% per year) and Namibia (+1.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, grapefruit juice (single strength) export price decreased by -33.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 57%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Grapefruit Juice (Single Strength)

In 2021, approx. X tons of grapefruit juice (single strength) were imported in SADC; increasing by 12% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit juice (single strength) imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mauritius (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) represented roughly 48% of total imports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (13%), Tanzania (7.6%) and Angola (5.5%). Comoros (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mauritius (with a CAGR of +48.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X), Seychelles ($X) and Botswana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 63% of total imports. Namibia, Angola, Tanzania and Comoros lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Among the main importing countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +49.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -4.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Seychelles (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
