Grapefruit Market Size in SADC

In 2022, the SADC grapefruit market increased by 33% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Grapefruit Production in SADC

In value terms, grapefruit production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) remains the largest grapefruit producing country in SADC, comprising approx. 80% of total volume. Moreover, grapefruit production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Swaziland (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Madagascar (X tons), with a 2.8% share.

In South Africa, grapefruit production increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (-0.7% per year) and Madagascar (+0.4% per year).

The average grapefruit yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at 2021. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 13%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The grapefruit harvested area dropped to X ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the grapefruit harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Grapefruit Exports

Exports in SADC

Grapefruit exports reduced markedly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -17.7% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 46%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grapefruit exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the grapefruits exports, with a CAGR of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022. Swaziland (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +3.1 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest grapefruit supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +3.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Swaziland amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.4%).

Grapefruit Imports

Imports in SADC

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of grapefruits increased by 31% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 124%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grapefruit imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of grapefruits in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 53% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together comprising a 38% share of total imports. The following importers - Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.3% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +2.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-2.6%), Namibia (-7.2%) and Swaziland (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Mauritius increased by +11 and +9.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X), South Africa ($X) and Swaziland ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 84% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of -0.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -35.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 157% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
