Grape Market Size in SADC

The SADC grape market declined modestly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Grape Production in SADC

In value terms, grape production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grape production, comprising approx. 97% of total volume. It was followed by Namibia (X tons), with a 1.6% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in South Africa was relatively modest.

The average grape yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the yield increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the grape yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of grapes were harvested in SADC; standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Grape Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of grapes increased by 5.5% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, grape exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +47.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the grapes exports, with a CAGR of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022. Namibia (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +4.5 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest grape supplier in SADC, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports.

In South Africa, grape exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 12%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+12.4%).

Grape Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of grapes imported in SADC stood at X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, grape imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 53% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (8.5%), Zambia (7.5%) and Zimbabwe (5.7%). Namibia (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+17.5%), Botswana (+6.9%) and Swaziland (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-1.1%), Zimbabwe (-1.4%) and Namibia (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+17 p.p.), Zambia (+5.3 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Namibia, Zimbabwe and Mauritius saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -4% and -5.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapes in SADC, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 10% share.

In South Africa, grape imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+1.3% per year) and Botswana (+10.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
