In 2021, shipments abroad of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² decreased by -67% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 80%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² contracted notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports faced a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 209% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates g/m² structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Zimbabwe (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.5% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -26.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+17.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012-2021. Lesotho experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Zimbabwe (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 0.8% share of total exports.
In South Africa, exports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² shrank by an average annual rate of -22.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zimbabwe (+3.1% per year) and Lesotho (-10.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² decreased by -16.4% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 72%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.
In value terms, imports of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² reached $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 92%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m², constituting 49% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Malawi (X tons), together making up a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Madagascar (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 8.7% of total imports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² imports, with a CAGR of +35.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+27.6%), Malawi (+25.4%) and Zimbabwe (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Madagascar (-5.2%), Botswana (-8.9%) and Zambia (-13.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi and Zimbabwe increased by +46, +14, +5.4 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported graphic paper with mechanical fibre content under 10% and of weight under X g/m² in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +35.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+36.6% per year) and Botswana (-17.2% per year).
