After three years of decline, the SADC gravel and crushed stone market increased by 8.2% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Production of Gravel And Crushed Stone in SADC

In value terms, gravel and crushed stone production expanded sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of gravel and crushed stone decreased by -15.4% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 259%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gravel and crushed stone exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 27%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Zambia (X tons) was the main exporter of gravel and crushed stone, generating 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), generating a 19% share of total exports.

Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of gravel and crushed stone. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Zambia (+42 p.p.) and South Africa (+10 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest gravel and crushed stone supplier in SADC, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

In South Africa, gravel and crushed stone exports contracted by an average annual rate of -4.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -19.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 235% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+6.8%).

Imports of Gravel And Crushed Stone

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of gravel and crushed stone decreased by -24% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 52%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gravel and crushed stone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mauritius (X tons) was the key importer of gravel and crushed stone, making up 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together making up a 46% share of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Mauritius was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gravel and crushed stone imports, with a CAGR of +92.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+34.7%) and Botswana (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-7.4%) and Angola (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mauritius, Botswana and Mozambique increased by +48, +13 and +3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gravel and crushed stone in SADC, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mauritius amounted to +56.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-6.8% per year) and South Africa (-7.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a pronounced increase. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
