Green Bean Market Size in SADC

The SADC green bean market shrank to $X in 2022, reducing by -12.9% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Green Bean Production in SADC

In value terms, green bean production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Malawi (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Botswana (X tons), together comprising 76% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of +119.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average green bean yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -4.2% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then declined in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The green bean harvested area contracted slightly to X ha in 2022, approximately equating the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 8% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Green Bean Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of green beans increased by 59% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, green bean exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Botswana represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 51% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X tons). All these countries together held near 40% share of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +91.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Botswana ($X) remains the largest green bean supplier in SADC, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 12% share.

In Botswana, green bean exports expanded at an average annual rate of +84.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-12.2% per year) and Madagascar (+19.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -43.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 67% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Green Bean Imports

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of green beans, when their volume decreased by -1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green bean imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X tons) represented the major importer of green beans, creating 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons), together achieving a 52% share of total imports. Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the green beans imports, with a CAGR of +51.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+3.3%) and Madagascar (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-1.6%), Lesotho (-2.5%) and Swaziland (-20.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+39 p.p.), Madagascar (+3.2 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lesotho and Swaziland saw its share reduced by -2.4%, -2.8% and -33.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest green bean importing markets in SADC were Madagascar ($X), Tanzania ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +44.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -10% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
