Groundnuts Market Size in SADC

The SADC groundnuts market fell to $X in 2022, waning by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Groundnuts Production in SADC

In value terms, groundnuts production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Tanzania (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Malawi (X tons), with a combined 69% share of total production. Angola, Zambia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Angola (with a CAGR of +12.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average groundnuts yield shrank modestly to X kg per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 26%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the groundnuts yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of ground-nut (in-shell) in SADC declined to X ha, reducing by -2.4% on the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the groundnuts harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, exports of ground-nut (in-shell) in SADC declined to X tons, shrinking by -7.6% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 140% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, groundnuts exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 135% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mozambique represented the main exporter of ground-nut (in-shell) in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 49% of total exports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together took near 45% share of total exports. The following exporters - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each amounted to a 6.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to groundnuts exports from Mozambique stood at +11.3%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+22.6%), Zambia (+5.1%) and Madagascar (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-14.0%), Malawi (-18.3%) and Namibia (-24.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mozambique (+46 p.p.), Madagascar (+20 p.p.), Zambia (+5.1 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malawi (-3.4 p.p.) and Namibia (-6.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) emerged as the largest groundnuts supplier in SADC, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mozambique totaled +10.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-17.6% per year) and Madagascar (-3.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 140% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, groundnuts imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importer of ground-nut (in-shell) in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 37% of total imports in 2022. Lesotho (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 22% share, followed by Mauritius (11%), Malawi (11%), Zambia (8.5%) and Mozambique (4.5%). Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Malawi (with a CAGR of +99.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X), South Africa ($X) and Lesotho ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 70% of total imports. Malawi, Zambia, Swaziland and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Malawi, with a CAGR of +105.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 35% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
