After two years of decline, the SADC gypsum and anhydrite market increased by 5.5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, shipments abroad of gypsum and anhydrite increased by 55% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 81%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 67%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Tanzania (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 71% of total exports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Angola (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 26% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Namibia (with a CAGR of +120.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest gypsum and anhydrite supplier in SADC, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 12% share.
In Tanzania, gypsum and anhydrite exports expanded at an average annual rate of +36.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+0.7% per year) and Namibia (+61.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -3.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 32%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Gypsum And Anhydrite Imports
Imports in SADC
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of gypsum and anhydrite increased by 21% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +27.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 75% of total imports in 2021. Zambia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (5.2%). The following importers - Mozambique (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - each recorded a 7.3% share of total imports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gypsum and anhydrite imports, with a CAGR of +40.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+20.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+13.2%) and Zambia (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Swaziland (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+61 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Swaziland saw its share reduced by -2%, -6.4% and -13.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest gypsum and anhydrite importing markets in SADC were Zambia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), together comprising 79% of total imports. Mozambique and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.3%.
Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -12.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
