In 2021, the SADC gypsum, anhydrite and limestone market decreased by -1.2% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Production of Gypsum, Anhydrite And Limestone in SADC
In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone, when their volume increased by 36% to X tons. In general, exports enjoyed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 143%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +122.0% against 2018 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Tanzania (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) dominates exports structure, together mixing up 79% of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 7.2% share, followed by Zambia (6.3%). The following exporters - Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +84.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest gypsum, anhydrite and limestone supplier in SADC, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with an 8.9% share.
In Tanzania, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports increased at an average annual rate of +34.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-6.5% per year) and Zimbabwe (-6.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Gypsum, Anhydrite And Limestone
Imports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X tons of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone were imported in SADC; jumping by 75% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 107%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Madagascar represented the major importer of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 70% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), creating a 23% share of total imports. Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Madagascar increased at an average annual rate of +12.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+35.9%) and Zambia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.9% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+19 p.p.) and Madagascar (+5.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia saw its share reduced by -2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Madagascar ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gypsum, anhydrite and limestone in SADC, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.
In Madagascar, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone imports increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (-0.7% per year) and South Africa (+13.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (-3.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
