Imports in SADC
In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of hair brushes and shaving and toilet brushes for personal use, when their volume decreased by -9.2% to X units. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +74.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hair, shaving and toilet brush imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 73%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. South Africa prevails in imports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Mauritius (X units), Madagascar (X units), Angola (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Namibia (X units) - together made up 12% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+32.0%), Tanzania (+4.9%) and Mozambique (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +32.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-4.5%), Namibia (-12.2%) and Angola (-16.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+22 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.5 p.p.) and Madagascar (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius, Namibia and Angola saw its share reduced by -3.2%, -6% and -12.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 5.2% share.
