The shipments of the one major exporters of hair lotion and preparation, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hair lotion and preparation exports, with a CAGR of -3.4% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hair lotion and preparation imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 37% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Mauritius (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together took near 45% share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of hair lotion and preparation. At the same time, Zambia (+8.6%), Tanzania (+3.3%) and Mauritius (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +8.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-3.2%), Botswana (-5.0%) and Angola (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+3.6 p.p.), Zambia (+3.3 p.p.), Mauritius (+2.4 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana and Angola saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -8.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hair lotion and preparation in SADC, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 9.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+5.5% per year) and Tanzania (+1.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
