Hairpin Market Size in SADC

The SADC hairpin market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, increasing by 60% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a slight downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Hairpin Production in SADC

In value terms, hairpin production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, exports of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, surging by 19% on 2020. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 23%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each reached an 8.6% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+50.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +50.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest hairpin supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 1.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -12.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (-6.7% per year) and Zambia (+37.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (-5.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers increased by 48% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild decrease. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hairpin imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the main importer of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers, comprising 50% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Madagascar (8.7%) and Mozambique (7.9%). Mauritius (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hairpin imports into South Africa stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Mozambique (+13.2%), Tanzania (+12.6%), Botswana (+9.5%) and Madagascar (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-2.6%) and Mauritius (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar increased by +16, +13, +5.5 and +4.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers in SADC, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.9% share.

In South Africa, hairpin imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+24.1% per year) and Tanzania (+8.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
