Exports in SADC

For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons, which increased by 18% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 42%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+24.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.0% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+9.3 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest halogenated hydrocarbon derivative supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 0.4% share of total exports.

In South Africa, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative export price increased by +85.6% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 41%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.3%).

Imports in SADC

In 2022, supplies from abroad of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons increased by 9.6% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the largest importer of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons, constituting 69% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), generating a 13% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Angola (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+11.4%), Tanzania (+11.3%) and Madagascar (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.4% from 2012-2022. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritius (-1.3%) and Angola (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+7.7 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-1.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-7.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons in SADC, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 6.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 4.4% share.

In South Africa, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+9.4% per year) and Angola (-0.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
